The Foundation

Horsemanship comes first. Riding follows.

Most people come to us wanting to ride. What they discover is a beautiful relationship with the horse — both in and out of the saddle. Trust is what makes everything possible. That's horsemanship. And it's where every student at Libben begins.

“

Horsemanship is the art of communicating with a horse in a language it understands — through body language, intention, timing, and feel. It is not about control. It is about partnership.

THE PHILOSOPHY AT LIBBEN HORSEMANSHIP ACADEMY

Grace and a student working with a horse on the ground

The Partnership

A relationship that grows with every lesson

Each skill strengthens the others, lesson after lesson.
Mounted Riding
Riding with a horse that trusts you
◆
Horsemanship Skills
Grooming, tack, safety, and building daily routine
◆
Ground Work
Leading, haltering, and learning how the horse thinks
◆

Students who build this foundation ride with more confidence, more safety, and a connection to their horse that students who skip straight to riding rarely develop. It's the Libben difference.

Common Questions

What families want to know

What age can my child start lessons?

We welcome riders ages 5 to 105. Younger riders begin with ground-based horsemanship before moving into mounted lessons at an instructor's recommended pace.

Do I need to go to an intro lesson?

Yes. The intro lesson gives new students a safe place to ask questions and see what it’s all about in person, with the horses.

What should we bring to the first lesson?

Closed-toe shoes with a small heel, long pants, and a helmet if you have one — we have helmets available to borrow for your intro lesson.

Is this safe for a first-time rider?

Yes. Every new student starts with ground work and a paired horse-and-instructor match suited to their comfort level before progressing to independent riding.

My rider is nervous, or had a bad experience. Can you help?

Yes — this is something Grace cares about deeply. After her own serious riding accident, she shifted her focus to helping riders rebuild confidence, working through fear, mental blocks, and performance anxiety at a pace that feels safe. Every rider starts on the ground, and the intro lesson is a good, no-pressure place to talk it through.

What happens if all lesson slots are full?

Contact us and we'll add you to our waitlist. We keep groups small intentionally, so openings come up as current students move levels — most families hear back within a few weeks.

Do you offer a refund or pause option?

Reach out to our office directly — we work with families on schedule changes and pauses on a case-by-case basis.

Do students work with wild mustangs?

Yes. Libben students have adopted wild mustangs from the Bureau of Land Management in Ridgecrest and trained them through a 100-day program, helping the horses become calmer and more adoptable. The program was featured by KERO 23ABC News in Bakersfield.

Still have questions? An intro lesson is the best way to see it all for yourself.
